TEACHING ASSISTANT JOBS FAQs

There is no mandatory experience needed to become a TA but having a familiarity working with children or in an educational environment will usually be expected.

Gaining experience in a school setting can therefore be invaluable. By volunteering at a school, you can gain the opportunity to observe different teaching styles, interact with students and show your commitment to the profession. From this experience, you may even decide you wish to become a qualified teacher.

You can contact schools directly to enquire about potential volunteering opportunities. Many schools can help you request a Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) check, which will be needed to work in a school environment.

Get in contact with one of our specialist consultants today to learn more about the TA application process.

Entry-level TAs are required to have basic literacy and numeracy skills in English and Maths – usually to GCSE level. Unlike most qualified trainee programs, you do not need a degree, although having one could certainly be an advantage. However, you will need to take the Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) course to become a higher-level TA.
