DE&I JOBS FAQs

A head of diversity and inclusion will be required to liaise with stakeholders at all levels of an organisation and from a variety of different backgrounds. Advanced communication and interpersonal skills are therefore essential.

Collaboration skills are also a must, as a head of diversity and inclusion will need to be able to establish working practices, policies and behaviours which respect and respond to the positive opportunities and challenges that a diverse workforce and inclusive workplaces brings.

When hiring for DE&I roles, employers will often look for an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject. This could include human resources, business management, psychology, sociology or law. Relevant practical experience is also looked upon favourably by employers gained in environments where DE&I commitments have been progressed.

Organisations can organise relevant training and qualifications for you when you are in the role, such as short courses offered by Equality & Diversity UK or modules within CIPD qualifications

A DE&I professional’s role is to develop, monitor and review workplace policies, practices and behaviours that promote inclusion and fair treatment of all employees, especially those from underrepresented groups.

Typically, the role will include providing organisations appropriate advice on DE&I issues and producing recommendations to further promote inclusion in the workplace.
