The key skills needed to work in employee relations include great communication and interpersonal skills, due to the focus on building positive relationships with employees, as well as communicating organisational changes to the wider business. Other important skills include conflict resolution, empathy and leadership. 

When hiring for employee relation roles, employers will often look for an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject. This could include human resources, business management, psychology, sociology or law. Relevant practical experience in workforce management is also looked upon favourably by employers.  

Organisations can organise relevant training and qualifications for you when you are in the role, such as short courses, or modules within Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) qualifications.
