Your project management questions, answered

Are there lots of project management roles available right now?

Digital transformation is firmly on the agenda for most organisations – system integrations and migration, automation, new products and new software rollouts, to name but a few of the most common.

This means that demand for project managers is extremely high right now. So, what does this mean for you? It means that now is a great time to think about the next step in your career and start looking for an exciting new role.

What’s the career path for a project manager?

For highly experienced, specialised and certified project managers, with good knowledge of Agile methodologies and a proven record of end-to-end technical project delivery, there is a clear career path into leadership positions.

There are plenty of opportunities to advance into more senior roles, such as senior project manager or management consultant. Senior project management roles can easily command six-figure salaries.

What’s the salary for an IT project manager?

IT project manager salaries can range depending on location, industry and type of business. In financial services, for example, this would range from £65,000 in SMEs, to £120,000 for a senior role in a London-based, FTSE 250 company.

In London and the South East, junior to mid-weight project management contractors can earn between £250-£500 a day, dependent on experience, and a senior project management contractor could earn £550-£900 per day.

Which qualifications should I have to apply for IT project management jobs?

Agile Practitioner certifications are increasingly the most sought-after and useful qualification for today’s project managers. Further to this, other useful certifications include SAFe Practitioner certification, Six Sigma certification, PMP certification, Prince2, ITIL certification and any relevant university degrees.

What technical and soft skills are needed in project management jobs?

If you’re applying for a job as a project manager, management skills are vital, including agile team creation, project design, product development and software systems management for the whole organisation.

With new products, innovations that continue to evolve throughout the project and an overall pace of change that’s never been faster, you’ll need to strike the balance between closely managing all the different elements and allowing room for flex – communication will be absolutely vital to allow you to keep on top of what’s needed, keep everybody moving in the right direction and support the project through to its successful completion – or at least the first phase launch!
