It can happen to any of us, whether you’ve just started a new job or have been in a role for years – something about your job just doesn’t feel right. We all have good and bad days at work, but if the bad outweighs the good, then it’s important to unearth the source of your dissatisfaction.
We have outlined some common reasons why you may be feeling dissatisfied at work. If you’re experiencing any of the following, it may be time for you to consider finding a new role.
As a senior professional, you should be a trusted and respected voice bringing new ideas to the table to enhance the way your wider team works. However, if you feel like your ideas, input and opinions are not being heard, or are being actively ignored, it can be frustrating and demoralising. If you believe you’ve done all you can to make yourself heard, it may be time to make a move to a role where your input will be more valued.
One of the most frustrating things for a senior professional to deal with is an undermining of your authority. If you’re not respected as a leader, your ability to make changes is severely limited, impacting your morale as well as your development. You may have tried to challenge the root cause of the behaviour and reassert your authority, but if it continues regardless, you should look elsewhere.
Be it the people, the office politics or the work itself, a toxic workplace has the potential to be seriously detrimental to your mental health and wellbeing. It is normal to have the odd stressful day at work, but if internal conflict is regularly making you feel weary or depressed, making the move to pastures new could be the best option.
A key part of a manager’s role is to support and encourage their team to reach their career goals. However, it is important to not lose sight of your own progression. Maybe you feel like you’re not getting the recognition you deserve for reaching key objectives or have once again been overlooked for a promotion. If so, perhaps your skills would be better appreciated elsewhere.
The case may be that you have stopped sharing your ideas altogether or are no longer interested in advancing your career. These are just a couple of tell-tale signs that you may have lost your passion for your current role. It’s important not to get too complacent in a role, so if this sounds familiar, then it may be time to have a complete refresh and find a new role that is more motivating and can offer you more opportunities.
