Specialists Rising: Why the future of your office relies on niche skillsets

By Roddy Adair, Director, Hays Personal & Executive Assistants

The way we think about the office is changing. Covid-19 has forced a revolution in the workplace, and many organisations are rethinking the skills that they require from their teams in order to stay ahead. 72% of office administration and contact centre employers say the skills their teams need to meet key organisational objectives have changed since the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s clear to all that the world of work is changing, with new challenges emerging every day which need to be overcome with increasingly specific skillsets.

Traditionally, office support has been dominated by generalist roles serving a range of different functions. The office of today however no longer has that luxury. In order to keep pace with competitors, overcome challenges in technology and other transformative projects, your team needs access to office support professionals with niche skillsets – in other words, specialists who can focus on improving on a single area.

Top skills in demand

In a recent survey for our Career Insights Snapshot 2020, staff with managerial and leadership skills were most needed by office administration and contact centre employers (38%), followed by those with operations skills (33%) and projects and change management skills (27%). Adopting a specialist approach to staffing and recruitment would ensure that each of these areas had the support that they needed without overstretching a more generalist team.

Tech support specialists wanted

Technology is also an area which requires extra support since the Covid-19 outbreak, with the necessity for remote working having placed extra pressure on most organisations’ IT systems. It’s unsurprising then that 21% of office administration and contact centre employers say they need a team with additional IT infrastructure skills. Additionally, 16% require professionals with data and analytics skills and 12% say they need a team with software development skills. This demonstrates a clear need for office support professionals who can demonstrate competencies and nice skillsets beyond those of a generalist office support worker.

A specialist approach

The rise of the specialist is leading to a more compartmentalised approach to working. Instead of a team of general office support professionals taking on many roles, a mixed team of specialists in sales support, compliance support, project management support and others are becoming the face of the office, benefiting efficiency and productivity as well as presenting clearer career paths for professionals.

If you’re changing the way you think about how an administrative team functions and want to take the first steps to creating a more specialist workforce, our consultants know who you need, and are standing by to find the right people to join your team.
