Health and Safety Advisor, Coventry, Hybrid working, £37,000-£40,000

HAYS are delighted to be working with Coventry City Council on a permanent piece of recruitment for a skilled and proactive Health and Safety Advisor to facilitate the successful management of health and safety throughout the Council. The successful candidate will provide competent, clear, and consistent technical advice and guidance at both operational and strategic levels, supporting allocated portfolio areas.

This role is paying between £37,000-£40,000 per annum, and the successful candidate will be based on site in Coventry 2 days per week.

The key responsibilities of this role are:
  • Assist in the development, consultation, implementation, evaluation, and review of health and safety arrangements, including strategies, policies, procedures, and management practices.
  • Work proactively with HR colleagues and senior managers to ensure an integrated approach to policy development.
  • Support management in consulting with Trade Union Workplace Safety representatives and assist in resolving identified concerns.
  • Provide support to the Council's health and safety joint consultative committee process.
  • Provide health and safety advice, assist managers in identifying hazards and assessing risks, and advise on preventive measures.
  • Advise on procedures for serious and imminent danger, including fire drills and evacuations, and observe their effectiveness.
  • Review health and safety management systems, conduct safety audits, and report findings to relevant managers and committees.
  • Ensure adherence to Council reporting procedures for accidents, incidents, and assaults, and support the investigation and remedial action process.
  • Assist in health and safety inspections of Council buildings, parks, work equipment, construction sites, and civil engineering works.
  • Contribute to Council-wide communication of health and safety advice through information, instruction, and training.
  • Review accident and incident reports, determine underlying causes, and recommend preventative strategies.
  • Provides practical, technical, and compliance advice on health and safety issues, policies, and procedures.
  • Undertake or contribute to projects, lead task forces, and implement cross-directorate initiatives.
  • Liaise with West Midlands Fire Services, HSE, Environmental Health Team, and other enforcing authorities.
  • Review health and safety in contract specifications and advise on prospective contractors' documentation.

In order to be successful in this role, you will have:
  • Proven experience in health and safety management, with a minimum of a NEBOSH Diploma in Health and Safety or IOSH membership or equivalent.
  • Strong technical knowledge of health and safety legislation and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage politically sensitive issues.
  • Experience in project management and financial accountability.
  • Ability to conduct safety audits and inspections.
  • Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
