Your new role
Southend-on-Sea City Council is excited to offer a rare opportunity to join our Regulatory Services team as an Apprentice Regulatory Services Officer (Trading Standards pathway). This apprenticeship offers hands-on experience while you study towards a fully funded Level 6 Trading Standards Professional Apprenticeship, recognised by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute. As an apprentice regulatory services officer, you will support the delivery of the regulatory functions within Regulatory Services and undertake the learning requirements of the apprenticeship.

• Conduct inspections and follow-up visits at local premises to monitor compliance
• Investigate complaints and reports of illegal or unsafe trading practices, including underage sales and counterfeit products
• Support the team with the enforcement of laws related to consumer protection, product safety, illicit tobacco and vapes, and fair trading
• Provide guidance and advice to businesses and the public
• Assist in collecting evidence, preparing case files, and participating in legal proceedings under supervision
• Develop practical and technical skills using the Council’s systems and equipment

This post is offered as a 3-year fixed-term contract. There is a national shortage of Trading Standards Officers and successful completion of the programme will position the post holder favourably to apply for these.



What you need to succeed
This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about community protection, enjoys problem-solving, and wants to make a real impact across a vibrant coastal city.

We're seeking a motivated, detail-oriented individual with:
• a Level 3 qualification (e.g. A-levels, NVQ, or Level 3 apprenticeship (Desirable)
• a genuine interest in trading standards, regulation, or public protection
• The ability to follow procedures, interpret legislation, and communicate effectively
• a proactive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to completing the apprenticeship

Your application will not be considered if you do not have a minimum of five GCSE passes (including English and Maths at grade A-C or 9-4) and this must be evidenced with a certificate.

This is a progressive role which means that the advertised salary will increase when competency assessments are met.
