Deputy Clerk

Your new company

An independent tribunal and a limited company, playing a vital role in upholding the integrity of the legal profession. Funded by the Solicitors’ profession in England and Wales. They adjudicate on cases of professional misconduct referred by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Their remit has grown significantly over the years and are a key part of the regulatory landscape.

Due to a recent restructuring and an influx of complex cases from the SRA, they are expanding the team and seeking a Deputy Clerk to support our mission of ensuring justice, fairness, and professional accountability.

Your new role

As Deputy Clerk, you will be a trusted legal advisor to tribunal panels, guiding them on procedures and points of law. You will also be responsible for:

  • Drafting clear, coherent judgments and legal documents
  • Advising on rules of evidence and tribunal procedures
  • Supporting panel members (including lay and solicitor members) during hearings
  • Managing caseloads and contributing to strategic litigation (SLAPS)
  • Providing leadership and mentoring to junior clerks
  • Ensuring hearings run smoothly and efficiently

This is a role that requires credibility, emotional intelligence, and the ability to balance empathy with firmness in often sensitive and high-stakes situations.

What you'll need to succeed
  • Seeking a seasoned legal professional who brings:

    • Qualified solicitor or barrister status (10+ years PQE preferred, flexibility for exceptional candidates)
    • Strong litigation experience and understanding of trial processes
    • Background in regulator, criminal, housing, employment, or disciplinary law
    • Experience advising on professional conduct or tribunal matters
    • Excellent written communication and judgment drafting skills
    • A calm, mature presence with the ability to support and challenge panel members appropriately
    • A collaborative, self-motivated approach
