Your new company

This organisation is one of Northern Ireland’s largest and most recognised public bodies which is situated in Belfast City Centre. This organisation owns and operate a vast estate of buildings and land across the city and employs about 4,000 staff.

Your new role

This is a temporary contract position for an initial 12 month period based in Belfast City Centre.
You will have the option to work full-time or part-time hours along with flexible start and finish times and hybrid working arrangements.
You will manage the organisation’s waste and recycling operations, ensuring full legal compliance, environmental responsibility, and alignment with the organisation’s sustainability and carbon reduction goals. The post holder will be responsible for the operational delivery of waste services and the promotion of waste minimisation, reuse, and recycling initiatives, while directly managing one member of staff and supporting a culture of high performance and sustainability.

What you'll need to succeed

To be eligible for this position you must meet the following criteria:

Essential Criteria
  • Proven experience in waste and recycling management within a large and complex environment, ideally in the public sector.
  • Knowledge of UK waste regulations, Duty of Care, and environmental compliance standards.
  • Experience managing or supervising staff and working collaboratively with operational teams.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver effective services.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and educate a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Proficient in the use of IT systems, including Microsoft Excel and waste data reporting platforms.
  • Understanding of sustainability and resource efficiency in an institutional setting.

Desirable Criteria
  • Membership of the Chartered Institution of Waste Management (CIWM) or other relevant professional body.
  • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent health and safety qualification.
  • Experience managing specialist waste streams (e.g. clinical, chemical, confidential).
  • Experience of working with or contributing to ISO 14001 or environmental management systems.

The salary range is £35,100 - £40,100 pro rata.
37 hours per week Monday to Friday. Reduced part-time hours available.
43 days annual leave including stat days (pro rata)
Flexible start and finish times to assist with work-life balance.
Hybrid working.
