Jacklyn Smith, Deputy Head of English

I arrived at HNS in my third year of teaching, after completing the Teach First programme at a comprehensive inner-city school in Lewisham. As part of my continued professional development in my recent role as Deputy Head of English, I have been completing the “Teaching Leaders” programme, designed to equipped teachers in middle management positions. I am grateful that HNS have given me this opportunity to grow professionally and to shape my practice as a leader within the school.

Within my department, I have been coordinating teaching and learning at KS3 and am responsible for the monitoring of all intervention that targets underperforming students. As a department, we have developed new curriculums which roll back the skills required in the new GCSE programme, which has been both exciting and demanding.

Claire McNally, Deputy Head of Science

I am currently working as Deputy Head of Science at Hackney New School. I arrived at HNS two years ago, after completing the Teach First programme in an Academy in Essex. HNS has provided me with opportunities to be a part of a growing school and help shape an engaging and successful Science department.

As Deputy Head of Science, my focus is ensuring that all KS3 students are equally challenged and supported in Science and that they are adequately prepared for the rigorous new GCSEs. As a team we have developed an exciting and demanding Science curriculum to ensure our students reach their full potential. As part of my continued professional development, I am participating in the “Teaching Leaders” programme to further develop my skills as a middle leader.

Justin Hitchman, PE Instructor

Before joining HNS, I previously taught PE at a Islamic boys school in Hackney. I moved to HNS in January 2015, to further develop my career in teaching and complete my QTS training. I was keen to join the PE department in a growing school, where I can excel and assist in establishing an exciting sports culture. The school supported me during the ‘Assessment Only’ route to QTS, by providing me with great mentoring and CPDs from a variety of expert teachers, within their specialised subjects. I have been successful in gaining my QTS in the Spring of 2017.

I run lunchtime and enrichment clubs to provided extra-curricular for all pupils. In addition, I also manage and coach the basketball team across all years, where we compete in friendly matches around London.

Steve Darragh, Head of PE

After 9 years of teaching in a wide variety of school and college settings, I was presented with the very exciting opportunity of growing and leading a PE department in a new inner London school. Three and a half years later, the thrill of working at HNS only strengthens every day. The diversity of the school population and the genuine enthusiasm that all pupils have for learning and being challenged makes every day an enjoyable experience. The relatively small cohorts of only of 100 student per year group means teachers are able to enjoy a stronger sense of impact on each student's learning. Working at HNS is hard work, but very rewarding, and I look forward to continuing to contribute to the Hackney New School community.

Natasha Danino, Teacher of PE and Dance

I am currently a Newly Qualified Teacher at Hackney New School and it is my first year of teaching after studying Secondary Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status at the University of Bedfordshire for four years. In my training years I taught in four different schools with a range of sports facilities. However, here at Hackney New School all Physical Education lessons are taught off site come rain or sunshine at a range of local leisure and sports centres. This has enabled me to develop my teaching skills and embrace teaching and learning alongside the students in a range of different environments. I am also a co-tutor and enjoy supporting and taking on a lead role in a Year 8 form class. I enjoy working at Hackney New School and look forward to being an integral part of a school growing and developing in the coming years.

Jayne Voice, Senior Leadership Team and SENCO

My journey at Hackney New School started 4 years ago and feels like only yesterday! I had previously been teaching in a large comprehensive secondary school in Hertfordshire for 8 years and was part of the music and Inclusion faculties.

The opportunity to be involved in the opening of a new school as part of a seniorship leadership team in a music focused school and the chance to build and develop a Special Needs Department excited me from the start.

The opportunity to be involved in the opening of a new school as part of a seniorship leadership team in a music focused school and the chance to build and develop a Special Needs Department excited me from the start.

Mixed ability teaching at Key Stage 3 has enabled our students to progress, regardless of ability or need, and has enabled those students who have additional needs to have high aspirations and has removed the stigma usually felt by those students who experience life in bottom sets.

Since its conception there has been an emphasis on ensuring that our students are confident and able to access support in areas including academic, pastoral, social and emotional. At Hackney New School, Students are not afraid to ask and access support whether this be via the Learning Support Assistants in class, Pastoral Managers or through the Place2Be therapy service. This ethos has been nationally recognised as we were awarded the ‘Community Mental Health Award’ in November 2016.

Joining the HNS team was the best decision that I ever made and I look forward to furthering my career within the school and celebrating our first GCSE results in 2018!
