Hays Education are currently recruiting for a qualified Teacher of English to join a dedicated Alternative Provision in Sunderland on a full-time temporary basis for the Autumn Term, commencing in September 2026.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and passionate English teacher who is committed to supporting young people who may have faced barriers to mainstream education. The successful candidate will play a key role in engaging students, raising attainment, and helping learners achieve positive outcomes both academically and personally.
The Role
- Deliver engaging and high-quality English lessons across KS3 and KS4.
- Plan, prepare, and assess learning in line with curriculum requirements.
- Differentiate learning to support students with SEND, SEMH, and additional needs.
- Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes student engagement.
- Implement effective behaviour management strategies.
- Work collaboratively with teaching, pastoral, and safeguarding teams to support student progress and wellbeing.
Requirements
✅ Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is essential
✅ Experience teaching English at secondary level
✅ Strong classroom and behaviour management skills
✅ Ability to build positive relationships with vulnerable and disengaged learners
✅ A resilient, patient, and adaptable approach
✅ Experience within Alternative Provision, PRU, SEND, or SEMH settings is desirable but not essential
✅ Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one
✅ Experience teaching English at secondary level
✅ Strong classroom and behaviour management skills
