Senior Finance Assistant / Assistant Management Accountant – Public Sector – £30,000 to £33,000

A respected public sector / not-for-profit organisation in Devon is seeking a dedicated finance professional to join their team. This is a permanent opportunity offering stability, variety, and the chance to make a real impact within a community-focused organisation.
Your new role
As a Senior Finance Assistant / Assistant Management Accountant, you will play a key role in supporting the organisation’s financial operations. Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing purchase and sales ledgers, processing invoices, and reconciling accounts.
- Completing month-end close, journals, and producing income and expenditure reports.
- Handling payroll from start to finish, including pensions and statutory payments.
- Preparing VAT returns, bank reconciliations, and assisting with year-end accounts.
- Supporting budget monitoring, cash flow forecasting, and preparing reports for senior management.
- Liaising with external auditors and implementing recommendations.
- Supervising and coaching junior staff and providing cover for the Finance Manager when required.
This is a varied role that combines transactional finance with elements of management accounting.
What you'll need to succeed
- AAT Level 3 or 4 (or equivalent experience).
- Strong knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping, payroll, and VAT processes.
- Experience with month-end routines, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently.
- Strong communication skills and confidence in liaising with stakeholders.
- Previous experience in the public sector or not-for-profit environment is desirable but not essential.
