Principal Sustainable Design Consultant

They are leading with Science to provide sustainable and resilient solutions for their clients.


It's a fantastic opportunity for a BREEAM professional to join a growing sustainable design team. We are looking for candidates based in Manchester, Leicester, or Leeds, with flexible remote work in line with our client's hybrid working policy. Their portfolio includes a diverse range of clients across sectors such as property, education, defence, and government services.

About You

We are seeking experienced consultants with a strong track record to join the team. You will contribute to a diverse range of significant and complex projects across various sectors. In this role, you will work autonomously and proactively, ensuring the commercial success of projects. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with senior management and take ownership of key project workstreams. Leading workshops with design teams will be an important aspect of your role. You will also be responsible for the management, growth, and mentorship of junior team members, while actively engaging with clients to ensure project delivery within established timelines and budgets, and to effectively navigate any changes that may arise.
We are looking for individuals with strong critical thinking skills, capable of delivering work with a high degree of autonomy. Our projects are in diverse locations, and occasional travel, as well as the flexibility to work outside standard office hours, may be needed. As part of your role, you will contribute to progressive and inspiring projects, gaining exposure to innovative initiatives across various sectors. Their structured Competency Framework will provide you with a clear roadmap for advancing your career within the firm.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide BREEAM consultancy services on a range of asset types including offices, data centres, education and training facilities, residential institutions, workshops, etc.
  • Lead client and design team workshops, ensuring clear and articulate communication.
  • Collaborate closely with key stakeholders to develop sustainable design strategies and produce sustainability statements in support of planning applications.
  • Prepare and submit assessment reports for BREEAM.
  • Advise clients on cost-effective solutions to achieve desired BREEAM ratings.
  • Support the training and development of junior team members.

Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant subject.
  • 4 or more years of relevant industry experience.
  • Licenced BREEAM assessor.
  • Understanding of Building Regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex sustainable design concepts to clients, team members, and stakeholders.
  • Willingness to apply for security clearance.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in DREAM and Sustainability Appraisals for projects in the defence sector.
  • Some experience in thermal modelling or SAP assessments.
  • Knowledge of whole life-cycle carbon assessments (preferably using One Click LCA).
  • Experience facilitating circular economy workshops with key stakeholders.
