Multi‑Skilled Mechanical Engineer | Crewe

Salary: £40,000–£45,000 DOE
Hours: Monday–Friday, 08:00–17:00 + overtime/on‑call
Contract: 3‑month temporary to permanent
Location: Cheshire area (commutable engineering site)

About the Environment
This role is based within a major UK engineering and industrial maintenance environment, supporting a high‑performance rail, mechanical, and component‑overhaul facility. The site has benefited from significant modernisation, including state‑of‑the‑art HVAC refurbishment areas, upgraded workshops, and advanced test cells designed to replicate real-world operating conditions for mechanical systems. These facilities support the overhaul of critical components such as HVAC units, bogies, wheels and traction systems, following substantial multi‑million‑pound investment into modern engineering capability and expanded maintenance capacity.

The wider engineering environment is known for its long-standing role in UK rail and industrial history and now houses cutting‑edge technology, complex mechanical systems, and fully modernised operational office space following a major refurbishment programme. This setting is ideal for engineers experienced in mechanical maintenance, facilities engineering, or industrial plant support who enjoy working with advanced equipment, structured PPM, and safety‑critical mechanical systems.

The Role
You will act as a Multi‑Skilled Mechanical Engineer responsible for delivering planned and reactive maintenance across a wide variety of mechanical systems and building services equipment. This includes HVAC units, pumps, motors, valves, water systems and general mechanical plant—ensuring safety, reliability and operational continuity in a fast‑moving engineering environment. This is a hands‑on role for an engineer comfortable working within a technically complex, compliance‑driven industrial site.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Maintenance
  • Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive repairs on mechanical systems including HVAC equipment, plant machinery, pumps, motors and valves.
  • Diagnose, fault‑find and remediate breakdowns to minimise operational disruption.
  • Complete mechanical adjustments, component replacements and system optimisation.
Water & HVAC Compliance
  • Maintain domestic and commercial water systems in line with L8 / Legionella regulations.
  • Support evaporative cooling system checks and associated compliance tasks.
Safety, Documentation & Quality
  • Produce and follow Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for all tasks.
  • Maintain accurate digital and paper‑based maintenance records using CAFM/CMMS systems.
  • Comply with all on‑site health & safety standards, quality systems (including ISO 9001/14001), and operational procedures.
Site Operations
  • Liaise professionally with on‑site teams and support personnel.
  • Support basic building fabric repairs where required (e.g., plumbing, fixtures).
  • Provide support for emergency callouts and out‑of‑hours engineering cover as part of the rota.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
  • Recognised mechanical qualification: City & Guilds / NVQ Level 2 or 3 or equivalent.
  • Strong experience with mechanical plant maintenance, including pumps, motors and valves.
  • Experience working on HVAC systems, with ability to carry out both PPM and reactive maintenance.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety procedures; IOSH/NEBOSH desirable.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, follow compliance processes, and work safely in a high‑risk engineering environment.
Desirable
  • Experience in industrial engineering, rail maintenance, or large‑scale manufacturing settings.
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Certifications such as PASMA/IPAF, 18th Edition, or gas/combustion competence.
What’s on Offer
  • Competitive salary (£40k–£45k DOE).
  • Opportunity to secure a permanent role after 3 months.
  • Work within a modernised, high‑technology engineering environment.
  • Overtime opportunities and participation in an on‑call rota.
  • Training and development aligned to a major UK engineering facility.
