Role: Multi‑Skilled Engineer (Mechanical Bias)
Location: Manchester – Large Commercial / Retail Environment
Contract Type: 3 Month Temporary (potential for extension)
Working Pattern: Mixed shifts – mornings, lates and weekends (rota provided in advance)
Salary: Equivalent to £43,000–£45,000 per annum during the contract period

Company Overview
A leading UK facilities management organisation is seeking a Multi‑Skilled Engineer (Mechanical Bias) to join its engineering team supporting a high‑footfall commercial environment. The business delivers planned and reactive maintenance, technical engineering services, and compliance-based support across complex estates, retail centres and business‑critical environments.

Role Overview
The Multi‑Skilled Engineer (Mechanical Bias) will provide a blend of planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, and mechanical fault resolution across the building’s core systems. This role requires strong mechanical capability and confidence working within a busy, public-facing commercial setting. Support across basic multi‑trade tasks may be required where competent.

Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Maintenance & PPM
  • Conduct mechanical servicing, repairs and maintenance across HVAC, hot and cold water systems, pumps, valves, pipework and associated plant.
  • Deliver scheduled PPM works to ensure compliance, operational integrity and minimal downtime.
  • Perform inspections, testing and condition monitoring of mechanical systems.
Reactive Maintenance & Fault Resolution
  • Respond rapidly to mechanical and building services faults, diagnosing issues and completing efficient repairs.
  • Support general building maintenance tasks where appropriate (e.g., minor plumbing or basic fabric work).
  • Liaise with supervisors and on‑site stakeholders to communicate status, defects and follow‑up requirements.
Compliance, Safety & Documentation
  • Follow all health and safety procedures, including safe systems of work, permits‑to‑work and risk assessments.
  • Accurately complete all documentation, including service sheets, logbooks and digital CAFM updates.
  • Support contractor management by overseeing third‑party works as required.
Operational & Team Support
  • Work collaboratively with the onsite FM and engineering teams to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Assist with escalations, technical queries and site‑wide engineering issues.
  • Provide a customer‑focused service in a live retail environment.
Qualifications & Experience Required
  • NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent in Mechanical Services / Plumbing / Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience working in a facilities management environment, preferably in large commercial or retail buildings.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems (HVAC, pumps, valves, AHUs, water systems).
  • Ability to use digital handheld devices for job allocation and reporting.
  • Basic electrical and multi‑trade knowledge beneficial.

Working Hours & Conditions
  • Mixed shift pattern covering mornings, lates and weekends (rota communicated in advance).

  • Work based within a large, multi‑level commercial/retail property with continuous public interaction.
