Mechanical Design Engineer

Overview
A leading engineering solutions provider in the water sector is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to take ownership of mechanical design activities across a portfolio of treatment, storage, and infrastructure projects. This role suits an experienced engineer who enjoys technical leadership, delivering high‑quality designs, and working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mechanical system design — Lead the design of mechanical systems, assemblies, and equipment for water and wastewater applications, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client specifications.
  • 3D modelling and drafting — Produce detailed 3D models, GA drawings, fabrication drawings, and BOMs using modern CAD platforms.
  • Technical leadership — Mentor junior engineers and designers, reviewing work for accuracy, safety, and compliance.
  • Project coordination — Collaborate with project managers, process engineers, and site teams to ensure designs integrate seamlessly into wider project scopes.
  • Stakeholder engagement — Participate in design reviews, clarify technical requirements, and provide expert input throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Standards and compliance — Ensure all designs meet relevant water industry regulations, internal quality procedures, and safety standards.
  • Site support — Conduct site surveys and provide installation or commissioning support when required.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Strong background in mechanical design within the water sector, utilities, or similar process‑driven environments.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software and engineering drawing standards.
  • Knowledge of pumps, pipework systems, pressure vessels, steelwork, and mechanical handling equipment.
  • Ability to produce calculations, technical reports, and design documentation.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Understanding of CDM regulations and designing for safety.
Desirable
  • Experience with modular design, DfMA, or off‑site fabrication.
  • Familiarity with UK water company frameworks.
  • Experience with FEA or other engineering analysis tools.
