Hays are excited to partner with our client in the search for a new Senior Financial Accountant to join their dynamic function of 11, directly managing 4 of the team.

Your new role
As Senior Financial Accountant, you will report to the Head of Finance and play a pivotal role in shaping the financial integrity of the organisation. You’ll lead a team of four, including the Financial Accountant, Project Accountant, and Capital Assistant Accountant, and be responsible for statutory reporting, capital accounting, and financial governance across Scottish Canals’ extensive asset base.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the preparation of annual statutory accounts in line with the Government Financial Reporting Manual (FreM)
- Managing relationships with external auditors, internal audit, and asset valuers
- Overseeing capital expenditure reporting and the organisation’s £12.2m Capital Investment Plan
- Ensuring compliance with financial regulations, accounting standards, and internal policies
- Delivering robust asset valuation processes and maintaining the non-current asset register
- Supporting internal audit procedures and risk mitigation strategies
- Providing financial training across departments and contributing to continuous improvement
What you'll need to succeed
You’ll be a CCAB-qualified accountant with at least 3 years post qualification experience and a strong background of line management. You’ll have a strong technical understanding of financial accounting and be confident using SAGE 300 and SAGE Intelligence. Experience in the public sector and a solid understanding of financial controls, grant management, valuations and capital expenditure are desired.
