Your new company
A national public‑sector organisation with responsibility for overseeing major UK infrastructure is seeking a junior lawyer to join its specialist infrastructure and regulatory legal team on a fixed‑term contract until the end of August 2026.
The organisation is currently delivering a new multi‑year regulatory framework governing investment in critical infrastructure assets, involving billions of capital spend over the next five years. The work sits at the heart of decarbonisation, long‑term system resilience and consumer protection.
Your new role
You will join a high‑performing legal team advising on the design, implementation and defence of a major regulatory framework due to commence in 2026.
A key focus of the role will be supporting the organisation on appeals and contested regulatory decisions, including proceedings before a specialist competition and appeals body. You will work closely with senior lawyers, economists, policy teams, external Counsel and law firms on complex, time‑critical matters.
You will be involved in:
Advising on the legal operation of a new infrastructure price control framework
Supporting appeals and contentious regulatory matters, including defence strategy
Assisting with the preparation of witness evidence and submissions
Instructing and managing external Counsel and law firms
Advising on legal risk arising from the current regulatory framework
Providing public law and regulatory advice across a range of infrastructure‑related issues
This is a fast‑paced, high‑profile role offering exposure to serious regulatory litigation and nationally significant decision‑making.
What you'll need to succeed
To be successful, you will be a qualified lawyer (circa 3–5 years’ PQE as a guideline) with experience in public law, regulatory law or contentious regulatory work, and the confidence to get stuck into complex issues quickly.
You will be comfortable working under pressure, navigating technical material, and contributing to high‑stakes matters with financial, political and reputational sensitivity.
You may also have:
Litigation or appeals experience, including regulatory or public law disputes
Exposure to economic regulation or work involving major regulators
Experience from private practice, in‑house, public sector or prosecution environments
Involvement in complex, high‑value or strategically important cases
What you'll get in return
Salary of circa £55k (London) or £48k (Scotland) prorated for the duration of the contract
Hybrid working (minimum 1 day per week in the office)
Direct involvement in appeals and high‑stakes regulatory decisions
Strong onboarding and support within an expert legal team
Excellent CV value at the intersection of public law, regulation and litigation
A sustainable work‑life balance
