About the Role: We’re seeking an exceptional individual to step into a high-profile leadership role as Head of Communications for a Government department during a 12-month + maternity cover. This is a rare opportunity to shape how the organisation communicates with over 450,000 people across the UK and to champion the purpose and priorities at one of the most unique organisations in the world. You’ll be working in an energetic and fast-paced environment, working closely with Ministers and senior officials to deliver impactful, innovative, and inclusive communications.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Communications Strategy, ensuring alignment with wider government priorities.
- Provide strategic oversight and high-quality support to the Secretary and COO.
- Manage and inspire a high-performing communications team, fostering collaboration and resilience.
- Drive internal communications campaigns that engage and inform civil servants across the UK.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders across Whitehall and the Devolved Administrations.
- Represent the department in high-level meetings, bringing credibility, insight, and influence.
- Champion professional development and capability-building within your team and the wider Government Communications Service (GCS).

- Able to lead a team that has a real impact
- Highly experienced in communications and previously worked for a large complex organisation, ideally in the public sector
- Highly experienced in dealing with a wide range of stakeholders, including high-profile stakeholders
