Finance Director

Do you have exceptional leadership qualities? Are you able to provide strategic direction ensuring financial sustainability? Can you collaborate successfully at a senior level to drive institutional change?
Role Overview:
Reporting to the Director of Finance, you will be the Finance Director for a division with an annual income of £200 million. You will play a significant role in scoping and developing the overall strategy. You will also have a finance leadership role within the finance community, contributing to the strategic agenda and development of the finance service.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute a unified Financial Service strategy.
  • Build strong working relationships with colleagues in Financial Services and Management Accounting.
  • Share and develop best practices with other lead finance managers.
  • Represent the division on the Finance Executive team and engage local finance managers in service development.
  • Provide leadership in developing an effective and efficient service across the division.
  • Lead the vision and implementation of the finance strategy in line with institutional goals and priorities.
  • Take a lead role on some Finance Service projects and provide input to others.
Specific Duties:
  • Support the organisations' mission by balancing reputational and financial considerations.
  • Lead and implement significant elements of the strategy.
  • Manage all aspects of financial management, reporting, and research grant management.
  • Develop a comprehensive and sustainable financial strategy.
  • Ensure robust financial planning, budget monitoring, and control.
  • Provide financial information and advice for new initiatives, strategic reviews, major funding bids, and commercial partnerships.
  • Ensure effective research grant planning and management.
  • Engage with external bodies and participate in commercial negotiations.
  • Ensure high standards of financial performance management, reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Ensure compliance with financial procedures and year-end accounting.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Professionally qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA).
  • Extensive experience in leadership and management in a senior finance role.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage a significant and diverse team.
  • Experience in delivering strategic and operational objectives through large and complex change projects.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure with multiple stakeholders and tight deadlines.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, influencing, and negotiating skills.
  • Appreciation of financial challenges in the current economic climate.
  • Ability to manage and maintain service quality and coordinate services at the departmental level.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience with mainframe accounting systems.
Desirable:
  • Experience in a finance role within the Higher Education Sector
  • Understanding of relevant legislative and statutory frameworks, including company and charity law.
