I am representing a well‑established organisation based in Belfast that plays an important role in supporting communities and delivering high‑quality services. As the team continues to expand, they are now seeking a dedicated Finance Assistant to support the delivery of accurate financial processes and maintain robust internal controls.
Your new role
Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will play a key role in the day‑to‑day financial operations of a busy Finance team. This is a varied position that will give you exposure across invoicing, payroll support, reconciliations, and financial administration. Your responsibilities will include:
- Processing supplier and sales invoices accurately and within scheduled timelines
- Ensuring correct VAT coding and assisting with maintaining the Purchase Order register
- Preparing monthly reconciliations, including personal allowance funds in line with regulatory requirements
- Creating and reconciling debtor and creditor accounts
- Running weekly supplier payment runs
- Supporting 4‑weekly payroll cycles, including gross pay calculations, timesheets, expenses, and statutory updates
- Posting reallocation journals to ensure correct project coding
- Assisting with Gift Aid administration and fundraising BACS file preparation
- Processing volunteer expenses, cheque requisitions, and credit card transactions
- Completing monthly financial checklists to ensure all reconciliations and controls are in place
- Supporting year‑end audit preparation and collating documentation for grant reviews and external audits
- Posting journals, approving bank transactions, and reconciling supplier statements
- Managing petty cash, cheque payments, and incoming Finance mail
- Undertaking ad hoc financial and administrative duties to support the wider team
This role offers excellent scope to broaden your accounting experience across multiple finance functions.
What you'll need to succeed
To be successful, you should have:
Experience & Technical Skills
- Experience working in a busy finance or accounts environment
- Strong understanding of financial processes, including invoice posting, ledger management, reconciliations, and journal processing
- Experience using accounting software (experience with ERP systems an advantage)
- Previous payroll processing experience using payroll software
- Confident IT skills, particularly Excel, Outlook, and Teams
Knowledge
- Understanding of core ledger structures—sales, purchase, nominal, and fixed assets
- Awareness of financial controls, audit trails, approval processes, and governance standards
- Good grasp of payroll calculations, statutory deductions, and related compliance
Soft Skills
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines
- Professional communication skills for engaging with colleagues, suppliers, and stakeholders
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- High level of confidentiality and discretion
Qualifications
- Working towards an Accounting Technician or Professional Accountancy qualification
OR - Minimum 1 year’s experience in a finance environment
