Rural Estates Lead, Initial 6-Month contract, Hybrid 1-2 days in office, East Anglia

Your new company

A rare and exciting opportunity has emerged with a prominent landowner to take the helm of a substantial rural estate portfolio exceeding 13,000 hectares. This senior-level interim role is ideal for a seasoned rural property professional looking to make a meaningful impact on a diverse and high-value landholding.

The estate, located in the East of England, supports over 160 rural tenancies and generates over £6 million in annual income. It plays a vital role in supporting local enterprise, environmental stewardship, and climate resilience, while also contributing to public access and biodiversity enhancement.

Your new role

As the Rural Property Lead, you will oversee a small, expert team and be responsible for both the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of the estate.

Your remit will include:
  • Delivering a refreshed long-term asset strategy for a rural portfolio valued at nearly £250 million.
  • Managing landlord-tenant relationships, lease events, maintenance, and capital works.
  • Advising internal stakeholders and elected members on estate matters, policy, and performance.
  • Driving sustainability initiatives and identifying opportunities for renewable energy and natural capital enhancement.
  • Overseeing financial performance, including revenue, budgets, and capital receipts.
  • Leading external consultants and ensuring high-quality professional advice and service delivery.

What you'll need to succeed

We’re seeking a dynamic and experienced rural surveyor with a strong background in estate management.

You will bring:
  • A degree in Rural Land Management or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in strategic estate planning, valuations, and rural tenancy management.
  • Strong commercial awareness and the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
  • Leadership experience, particularly in managing a team of rural estates surveyors and delivering complex projects.
  • A sound understanding of rural assets, property markets, sustainability, and planning frameworks.
  • Professional qualifications such as RICS chartership, CAAV membership, or an equivalent accreditation are highly desirable

What you'll get in return

This is an exciting and varied role managing one of the largest rural portfolios in the country. You will be leading a small yet high-performing team for an initial 6-month period, though this may extend up to 12 months. You'll be working 37 hours per week, with a minimum of 1-2 days in the office and the rest of your time spent working remotely should you wish.

You'll receive a day rate of up to £600 per day gross/umbrella, inside IR35.
