HV Transmission Engineering Lead (Day Rate Contract) - Remote with UK Travel

The opportunity

I am supporting a leading UK infrastructure organisation to appoint an HV Transmission Engineering Lead to steer multi‑discipline design delivery across major onshore transmission projects. You’ll lead an in‑house team of electrical engineers and designers through the full lifecycle—from tender and pre‑construction, into construction support and handover—partnering closely with commercial, delivery and sector teams to meet programme, budget and quality objectives.

What you’ll be doing
  • Act as the primary liaison between Engineering and wider internal/external stakeholders across a portfolio of HV transmission & substation projects.
  • Communicate clearly on design progress, risks, issues and outcomes; align expectations and enable informed decisions.
  • Own resource planning and forecasting for the electrical design function; balance workloads, skills and recruitment against demand.
  • Lead safe, on‑time, on‑budget design delivery; define scope and service requirements, monitor performance, and report transparently to senior leadership and project clients.
  • Assure technical compliance and quality across all deliverables; embed the required regulatory/standards assurance, validation and testing activities.
  • Provide hands‑on support to resolve complex technical challenges; drive value engineering and robust change control to minimise unnecessary scope creep.
  • Manage third‑party designers and supply‑chain partners—approvals, competency, specification compliance and technical governance.
  • Contribute as a subject‑matter expert to bids and early‑stage pursuits, shaping best‑in‑class value propositions and future pipeline.
What you’ll bring

Essential
  • A strong track record leading electrical engineering delivery for complex HV transmission programmes.
  • Recent UK substation project experience across the design lifecycle.
  • Demonstrable success managing complex scopes to budget and programme, with excellent commercial awareness.
  • Proven resource leadership: team workload, skills mix and recruitment planning.
  • Experience directing and assuring third‑party design partners.
  • Multi‑discipline appreciation (civil, mechanical, process) and the ability to review technical quality and compliance.
  • Champions Safety in Design, lean principles, sustainability and digital ways of working.
Desirable
  • Experience setting up and/or operating design workflows, information management systems and quality controls for major programmes.
Qualifications
  • Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (or equivalent).
  • Chartered Engineer status (e.g. IET / IMechE / ICE or equivalent).
Working pattern & travel
Hybrid working centred on one of a few UK locations, with occasional travel to other UK locations depending on project needs.
