Design Manager, Steel Fabrication, Steel Detailer

Your new role
As Technical Manager, you will lead the Detailing and Design Office, ensuring the delivery of accurate, timely, and cost-effective design solutions for architectural metalwork and structural steel projects. This is a senior leadership role where you will manage a team of detailers, oversee workflows, and act as the technical authority across all design stages from concept through to fabrication.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and mentor the detailing and design team, driving technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Review and approve fabrication drawings, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client specifications.
- Provide technical guidance on material selection, connection details, and fabrication techniques.
- Implement quality control procedures and ensure adherence to relevant codes (BS EN, Eurocodes, AWS).
- Collaborate with estimating, production, and site teams to align design intent with practical execution.
- Attend client meetings and site visits to resolve design challenges and manage change requests.
What you'll need to succeed
- Proven experience in architectural metalwork and structural steel detailing.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, Advance Steel, or similar 3D modelling software.
- Strong understanding of fabrication processes, welding standards, and erection methodologies.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Degree or HND in Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
- Minimum 5 to7 years’ experience in a technical or managerial role within steel fabrication or architectural metalwork.
- Chartered status (or working towards) is desirable but not essential.
