Part-time Saturday work only as a Customer Service Officer with Sandwell Council in the Sandwell Libraries

Your new company

On behalf of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, we are recruiting Customer Service Officers to support the delivery of library services across Sandwell. Libraries play a vital role within the local community, providing access to information, technology, learning opportunities and activities for people of all ages. These part-time positions offer the opportunity to join a friendly and community-focused service dedicated to delivering an outstanding experience for every visitor.

Your new role

We are looking for Customer Service Officers to work on Saturdays only until the end of September 2026. Opportunities are available at Hill Top Library, Oakham Library and West Bromwich Central Library from 10am to 2pm each Saturday, and at Smethwick Library from 11am to 3pm each Saturday.
In this busy customer-facing role, you will be the first point of contact for library users, assisting customers in person, by email and over the telephone with a wide range of day-to-day enquiries. You will provide a warm welcome to visitors and offer guidance and support to help customers make the most of the library’s services and resources. The role will involve supporting access to IT facilities, providing information and assistance, and helping to deliver activities and events for children, families and the wider community. You will also be responsible for opening and closing library buildings, handling library administration and ensuring customers receive a positive and professional service. Flexibility is important, as you may occasionally be required to work at alternative library locations depending on service needs.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you will have excellent customer service skills and experience working in a public-facing environment. You may already have experience within a library setting or be looking to bring transferable customer service experience from a retail, public sector, hospitality or administrative background. You will have good communication skills, enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds and be confident using computer systems and carrying out accurate data entry. An understanding of the importance of confidentiality, strong attention to detail and the ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations are essential. GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent experience, will also be required.

What you'll get in return

In return, you will receive a pay rate of £12.71 per hour plus holiday allowance, along with the opportunity to gain valuable experience within a respected local authority service. You will be part of a welcoming team, supporting essential community services and helping people access information, learning opportunities and local resources. These roles offer regular Saturday working on a temporary contract until the end of September with possible extensions, making it ideal for candidates seeking part-time work while making a meaningful contribution to their local community.
