Carpenter, HMP Swansea, Full time, temporary

Your new company

HMP Swansea is a Category B men’s prison located in the centre of Swansea, Wales, operated by His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. It functions primarily as a local and resettlement prison, supporting adult male prisoners from the South Wales courts, many of whom are on remand or serving short to medium‑term sentences.

Your new role

We are seeking a skilled carpenter to support the maintenance and improvement of the site. The role focuses on planned maintenance, refurbishment, and new works across prisoner and staff facilities, ensuring all tasks meet required standards while complying with Health & Safety and security procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out maintenance on all woodwork items throughout the establishment, including locks, doors, and windows (excluding electronic locking systems).
  • Undertake planned maintenance of locks in line with locking policy, manage the lock store, and maintain related logs, including work for local courts when required.
  • Install structures and fixtures such as windows and mouldings; measure, cut, and shape wood, plastic, and other materials; and construct building frameworks including walls, floors, and doorframes.
  • Conduct quality checks, condemn locks and keys where necessary, and arrange transportation to the central locking unit.
  • Manage planned maintenance, refurbishment, and new works across the estate, including painting and decorating of staff and prisoner facilities.
  • Complete allocated maintenance tasks and small repairs, and action requests raised through the Computer-Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system.
  • Prioritise activities in line with local procedures, escalating issues to the Site Manager when required.
  • Oversee prisoner work as agreed within the Service Delivery Agreement (SDA).
  • Conduct survey inspections—including in confined spaces and at height—recording all work and completing required logs and registers.
  • Monitor stock levels, request goods and services when necessary, and ensure all materials used are appropriate and logged.
  • Escort and supervise technical contractors in accordance with the Local Security Strategy (LSS).
  • Comply with all Health & Safety policies, procedures, and legislative requirements to ensure statutory compliance.
  • Undertake urgent and emergency tasks in accordance with SDA timescales.
  • Contribute to the effective management of tool inventories and maintain security standards in the work area.
