Assistant Accountant, Telford, £28-32000

Hays is proud to be partnered with a well‑established and expanding organisation based in Telford. With continued growth and a strong reputation in their sector, they are now seeking a motivated Assistant Accountant to join their dedicated finance team.


Your new role

As Assistant Accountant, you will play a key role in supporting the smooth and efficient operation of the finance function. You will take ownership of accurate and timely purchase ledger processing and ensure supplier payments are prepared and executed in line with internal deadlines. Alongside this, you will contribute to effective credit control by monitoring aged debt and progressing overdue accounts through established procedures.
You will handle employee and corporate expenses using SAP, prepare VAT returns, and complete associated reconciliations. Working closely with an external payroll provider, you will coordinate the processing of salaries and pension contributions. You will also review and maintain the (GRNI) accruals within the SAP system.
Your responsibilities will further include completing monthly and daily reconciliations—covering inter‑company accounts, balance sheet items, and bank activity—while also preparing accruals and prepayments. You will manage petty cash transactions, support the processing of letters of credit for sales orders, and contribute to the preparation of monthly management accounts.
Finally, you will play an important part in the annual audit process, ensuring information is readily available and supporting the finance team throughout the audit cycle.


What you'll need to succeed

  • Proven experience in a similar accounting position, ideally in a fast-paced finance team
  • Strong IT skills are essential, knowledge of SAP would be an advantage, as well as advanced Excel skills,
  • Excellent communication skills, with the capability to present and explain financial information to non-finance colleagues.
  • Highly developed analytical and methodical thinking, with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
