Assistant Accountant – Public Sector – Long Term Temp – Ballymena

You will be joining a large, forward‑thinking public sector organisation undergoing significant transformation within its Corporate & Support Services functions. The Finance division has recently expanded to strengthen financial governance, support strategic development, and enhance service delivery. You will be part of a high‑performing team that values continuous improvement, collaboration, and professional growth.

Your new role

As an Assistant Accountant, you will support a team of qualified accountants across a wide range of finance activities. Reporting to an Accountant within your specialist area, you will play a key role in accurate and timely financial management, reporting, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain financial records and prepare journals
  • Complete reconciliations across various accounts
  • Analyse financial data to support decision‑making
  • Support the preparation of management accounts and financial statements
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
  • Contribute to capital accounting activities, including asset register updates
  • Provide support with treasury tasks such as cashflow monitoring and bank reconciliations
  • Assist with grant management, including invoicing, claims and expenditure monitoring
  • Support internal and external audit processes
  • Offer guidance to junior team members
  • Ensure compliance with organisational policies, GDPR and financial regulations
You may work within Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Capital Accounting, or Treasury Management, with opportunities to rotate and broaden your experience.


What you'll need to succeed

Essential Qualifications
  • Completed AAT or IATI final examinations, or
  • Passed foundation‑level exams of a recognised accountancy body (CCAB, CIMA or equivalent)
  • Registered as a student or affiliate member of a professional accountancy body
Experience & Knowledge
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a finance team or audit environment
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and standards
  • Experience using accounting software
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel
