About the role

The Tooling Solutions Architect proactively and holistically leads and supports enterprise architecture activities that guide the development and management of tools and services used within IT Services and the University. These solutions enable the University’s future-state business capabilities and drive its targeted business outcomes.

The Tooling Solutions Architect will provide organisational leadership, facilitation, analysis and design around the development of the University’s tooling architecture within IT Services. The postholder will also develop target-state guidance (e.g. standards, guidelines, platforms, configurations, etc.) that will meet the ends of a continually evolving technology landscape. The role will help ensure tooling is used to its full potential to enable business outcomes and value for money, leading the architecture of key systems such as ITSM, monitoring systems, mobile device management and deployment tools amongst others.

The Tooling Solutions Architect will be a key member of the Technology division leadership team, providing strategic direction, anticipating challenges, driving performance and building the capability required to ensure secure and robust technical solutions and supporting infrastructure.


Person specification

  • Minimum five years of design and implementation experience in IT, with a deep knowledge of implementation and management of tooling such as Autopilot, ServiceNow, Intune, Jamf, Tanium and Zabbix amongst others.
  • Solid understanding of product management, agile principles and development methodologies and capability to support agile teams by providing advice and guidance on opportunities, impact and risks, taking account of technical and architectural debt.
  • Demonstrable ability to understand the long-term (‘big picture’) and short-term perspectives of situations and how they related to achieving targeted business outcomes.
  • Experience of applying multiple technical solutions or alternatives and estimating their financial impacts to enable future-state business capabilities that drive targeted business outcomes.
  • Capable of researching, analysing and capitalising on the functions and capabilities of existing, new and emerging technologies.
  • Desirable qualifications: Advanced ITIL, TOGAF, IASA

Salary / Package

This is a senior leadership position (grade 8) offering a competitive salary (depending on experience), along with 29 days annual leave (plus 4 closure days over Christmas and 8 bank holidays), flexible working (office based at least two days a week) and an attractive pension scheme (up to 21% employer contributions).
