A well-known council is looking for waste collection assistants.

Your new role

You will play a vital role in maintaining community cleanliness and public health by collecting and disposing of household, commercial, or industrial waste and recyclable materials.
Key Responsibilities
  • Waste Collection: Collect refuse or recyclable materials from curbside bins, sacks, or other containers in residential, commercial, or industrial locations and load them into waste collection vehicles (e.g., garbage trucks).
  • Operating Equipment: Assist in operating hoisting devices or compactors on collection trucks to load and process waste.
  • Route Assistance: Work as part of a team, often riding on the back of a garbage truck, directing drivers in traffic or at disposal sites, and ensuring timely collection along designated routes.
  • Safety and Maintenance: Check vehicles and equipment for safety and operational conditions, perform minor servicing, and report maintenance issues. Adhere to safety and environmental regulations to prevent contamination or accidents.
  • Recycling and Sorting: Sort recyclable materials (e.g., paper, plastic, glass, metal) at collection points or depots, checking for contamination (e.g., organic waste) to ensure proper recycling.
  • Customer Interaction: Engage with community members to promote waste reduction and recycling initiatives or address service-related concerns.
  • Cleanliness: Maintain cleanliness of waste collection areas, replace waste bags, and ensure bins are tidy and properly placed.
  • Hazardous Waste Handling: In some roles, assist with the safe disposal of hazardous materials, following strict regulations.

What you'll need to succeed
  • Physical Fitness: The role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift heavy loads repeatedly and work in all weather conditions.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment, often with drivers and other waste management professionals.
  • Time Management: Strong organisational skills to complete collection routes on schedule.
  • Knowledge of Regulations: Basic understanding of waste disposal, recycling practices, and safety protocols. Familiarity with local recycling guidelines is often preferred.
