Hays are recruiting a Full-Time Teaching Assistant in Cardiff for a mainstream secondary school. The role will involve supporting students in years 7 and 8 with additional learning needs or some aspects of challenging behaviour in small groups, as well as on a 1:1 basis. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a supportive, well-respected, and welcoming learning environment created by a highly regarded Cardiff Secondary school. The school offers mainstream and ALN support for students aged 11-18 and prides itself on the creative and engaging learning environment its staff manage to create. Your role will involve working in the mainstream and supporting classes. A key responsibility relating to this role is to ensure that any student supported is provided with the best opportunity to understand and engage with work set by the class teacher. The role is full-time, long-term, and a fantastic opportunity to work with a school who look to recruit their agency workers on a permanent basis where possible.

Your new role.

The role is confirmed long-term for an immediate start, working 5 days a week. However, there are additional positions with an earlier start date and / or part-time working patterns available. Duties relating to this role include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting a small group of year 7 and 8 students who require additional support.
  • Working on a 1:1 basis when required.
  • Demonstrating high levels of patience and empathy when dealing with potentially challenging behaviour or high levels of frustration from the student.
  • Creating and maintaining a safe and enjoyable learning environment.
  • Supporting the student with engagement in their academic work.
  • Working closely as part of a team with other members of the teaching staff.
  • Assisting teachers as they implement their creative and engaging lesson plans.

What you'll need to succeed

To be considered for this role, it is required that you possess at least 40 days of relevant experience working with children over the course of the last 2 – 3 years. Some of the key attributes and skills needed for this role include patience, commitment, calmness, and the ability to solve problems effectively when working under pressure.
