Hays is one of the market-leading agencies in the Education sector in Cheltenham and are currently actively recruiting for SEN Teaching Assistants to assist with a rising demand for supply staff. Hays has built long-lasting relationships with local primary and reception schools in Cheltenham and has a commitment to getting the right candidate in the right schools, with a number of jobs being registered every week.

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with a pupil, providing personalised support in a 1:1 setting. Your days will be filled with purpose as you assist the student with their learning journey.


What you will be doing/ your responsibilities:
  • Getting the classroom ready for lessons and clearing away afterwards so as to maintain a safe and clean environment
  • Assisting Teachers in preparing the lesson materials and school equipment
  • Recording and reporting children’s progress to the Teacher
  • Helping children stay focused during class hours
  • Supervising group activities, sports events and school outings
  • Helping Teachers manage student behaviour
  • Helping Teachers improving the core skills of children with Special Educational Needs, for example reading, writing or providing 1:1 care
  • Looking after children who are unwell or upset
  • Providing a healthy, engaging and safe learning environment for children
What you’ll need to succeed, skills and competencies:
  • Understanding of Special Educational Needs (e.g. physical or mental impairment, learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia), ADHD, ASD)
  • Ability to guide and support children with SEN (ages of 5-11)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and articulately
  • Inquisitive towards children, good relationship building
  • Ability to create an encouraging and appropriate learning environment for children with SEN
  • Empathetic - understanding, encouraging and sensitive towards children and their needs
  • Ability to carry out tasks involving a computer or hand-device
  • Resilient, ability to respond calmly and constructively when under stress
  • Adaptable and flexible work attitude
  • Ability to learn and use a range of strategies to deal with classroom and individual behaviour
Essential:
Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant or equivalent (at least 40 days in the last 5 years)
Desired but not essential qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field
  • Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or similar
  • Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education or similar
  • T Level in Education and Early Years or similar
