Are you passionate about tackling health inequalities and improving the lives of the most vulnerable in society? Hays are delighted to be partnering with Birmingham City Council to recruit an interim Senior Public Health Officer to join their Inclusion Health Team. This is a unique opportunity to lead innovative programmes that support some of the city’s most disadvantaged communities.

This role is a four-month contract paying between £24-£29 per hour, and is primarily remote working.

As a senior member of the Public Health Division, you will:
  • Lead and support the development, commissioning, and delivery of evidence-based programmes targeting inclusion health groups (e.g., homeless individuals, vulnerable migrants, veterans, victims of domestic abuse, and others facing multiple disadvantages).
  • Provide strategic and technical public health expertise to shape policy and practice across the Council and with external partners.
  • Manage and develop junior staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
  • Drive innovation through data-led insights, behavioural economics, and cross-sector collaboration.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject (e.g., Public Health, Epidemiology, Social Policy, Health Sciences), or significant experience working at a similar level in a specialist area.
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Substantial experience in:
  • Statistical analysis and interpretation of complex data.
  • Epidemiological methodologies and working with health/social care datasets.
  • Managing stakeholder relationships and shaping public health outcomes.
  • Developing and evaluating systems and tools to support data needs.

  • Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving abilities.
