Senior / Principal Mechanical Engineer: Birmingham

Your new company

You’ll be joining a leading, well‑established engineering consultancy delivering complex, high‑profile infrastructure projects across the UK water sector. The organisation has a strong reputation for technical excellence, innovation and long‑term client relationships with major water authorities.
The business fosters a genuinely collaborative and inclusive culture, where individuals are trusted, supported and encouraged to contribute at a senior level. Flexible and hybrid working is actively supported, with roles available across several UK offices.

Your new role

As a Senior / Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will hold a key position within a multi‑disciplinary design team delivering critical water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
Your role will involve:
  • Leading and coordinating mechanical engineers on complex design commissions
  • Delivering mechanical designs across pumping systems and water & wastewater treatment facilities
  • Producing and reviewing technical reports, drawings, calculations and design scopes
  • Providing mechanical input to projects while managing time, cost and quality expectations
  • Working closely with clients and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers within the mechanical team
  • Supporting technical input into bids and proposals
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant UK standards, legislation and quality assurance processes
You’ll be given the autonomy to make sound engineering judgements while helping to strengthen the mechanical capability of the wider team.

What you'll need to succeed

To be considered for this role, you’ll typically be able to demonstrate:

A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or working towards Chartership
Experience within a design consultancy environment, ideally within the water or wastewater sector
A proven track record of coordinating or managing mechanical design delivery in a multi‑disciplinary setting
Strong technical knowledge of mechanical equipment such as pumps, blowers, screens and chemical dosing systems
A solid understanding of UK design standards, relevant legislation and industry best practice, including CDM and DSEAR
The ability to work independently, apply professional judgement and resolve complex technical challenges
Clear communication skills and a collaborative, proactive approach

Water‑sector experience is advantageous but not essential.

What you'll get in return

In return, you can expect:
  • A competitive salary and tailored benefits package
  • Hybrid and flexible working arrangements
  • Opportunities to work on technically challenging, nationally significant infrastructure projects
  • Clear career progression pathways at Senior and Principal level
  • Ongoing professional development and support towards Chartership
  • A positive, inclusive working culture where your contribution is recognised and valued
