Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Manufacturing Sector
Location: Lancashire, UK
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

An established engineering firm operating within the manufacturing sector is seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the design and development of precision-engineered components for critical nuclear applications, with a focus on safety, reliability, and innovation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the mechanical design of complex components and assemblies for nuclear systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements
  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks or similar software
  • Perform engineering calculations and analysis to validate design integrity, including stress, thermal, and tolerance assessments
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, quality, and project management to ensure seamless product development
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers within the design team
  • Support design reviews, risk assessments, and documentation for regulatory submissions
  • Drive continuous improvement in design processes and contribute to R&D initiatives
Required Qualifications and Experience:
  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Extensive experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally within the nuclear, aerospace, or high-integrity manufacturing sectors
  • Proficient in CAD software (preferably SolidWorks) and engineering analysis tools
  • Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacture (DFM) principles
  • Familiarity with relevant nuclear industry standards (e.g. RCC-M, ASME, ISO)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities
Desirable Attributes:
  • Experience with pressure vessel design or valve systems
  • Knowledge of quality systems such as ISO 9001 and nuclear-specific QA protocols
