Your new company

Established over a decade ago, this independent consultancy specialises in delivering innovative solutions within the flood risk and water management sector.

The team is known for unlocking development potential on complex sites, offering expert services in flood modelling, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies. With a strong track record of challenging regulatory flood maps and contributing to multidisciplinary projects, the company supports clients both domestically and internationally.

Your new role

An independent environmental consultancy is seeking a Senior Flood Risk & Drainage Consultant to lead and deliver technically complex projects across a diverse portfolio. This role involves managing flood risk assessments, surface water drainage strategies, and coordinating multidisciplinary teams to support planning and infrastructure development.

The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping project outcomes, mentoring junior staff, and engaging with clients to guide decision-making.
The position offers exposure to both public and private sector work, including strategic infrastructure, flood defence schemes, and private developments. Internal training and professional development opportunities are provided to support career progression and specialisation.

The main responsibilities of this role are:

  • Lead the preparation of Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) and Surface Water Drainage Strategies
  • Interpret third-party datasets to inform planning decisions (e.g. design flood levels)
  • Advise on feasibility studies and identify project constraints
  • Review and approve technical work produced by others
  • Mentor junior consultants and contribute to team development
  • Communicate effectively with clients to support project goals
  • Use GIS software (e.g. ArcMap, QGIS, MapInfo) for spatial analysis and reporting

What you'll need to succeed

Essential:
  • Degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of consultancy experience in the UK water/environment sector
  • Strong report-writing skills with the ability to interpret and present technical data
  • Experience working with national planning policies such as NPPF, TAN15, or NPF4
  • Proven ability to manage time, resources, and client relationships effectively
Desirable:
  • Familiarity with drainage design software (e.g. InfoDrainage)
  • Understanding of the drainage hierarchy and experience in drainage assessments
  • Experience in customer-facing roles or client support
  • Ability to use AutoCAD for design and documentation

What you'll get in return

  • Remote working with quarterly regional office days
  • Flexible working
  • £40,000 - £50,000 (DOE)
  • Excellent career development opportunities
  • Good employer matching pension through salary sacrifice
  • Health Insurance (following probation)
