Senior Financial Controller, Qualified, Darlington

Your new company
HAYS are delighted to be working exclusively with the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) on this vacancy.

About NEP
Join one of the UK’s most exciting and pioneering projects – the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) is developing onshore and offshore infrastructure needed to transport CO2 from carbon capture projects across Teesside and the Humber – collectively known as the East Coast Cluster – to secure storage under the North Sea. The infrastructure is crucial to achieving net zero in the UK’s most carbon intensive industrial regions.
This is a first-of-its-kind, utterly unique and extremely exciting start-up organisation. NEP is in an incorporated joint venture established solely to develop and operate CO₂ transportation and storage infrastructure on behalf of the NEP Shareholders – BP, Equinor and Total Energies.

Your new role
As Senior Finance Controller, you will be responsible for the full remit of NEP’s financial control and reporting framework, within a highly regulated incorporated joint venture. This is a pivotal role, akin to an FD position. The Senior Financial Controller will be a key face of Accounting, Reporting & Control to the Board, sub-committees, auditors, and other external stakeholders (such as OFGEM and DESNZ), driving both control and change in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
The role will be part of an initially small Accounting, Reporting & Control team reporting directly to the Commercial Leadership Team.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Leading end-to-end monthly financial reporting and statutory accounts preparation.
  • Managing the statutory audit process and filing of the company’s statutory financial statements, liaising with auditors, regulators, and external stakeholders.
  • Designing and implementing robust internal controls and IFRS-compliant accounting policies.
  • Overseeing outsourced providers (accounting, payroll, tax & audit) to ensure delivery to contract and value for money.
  • Preparing key financial MI for the Board and Audit & Risk Committee.
  • Monitoring project financing, cash flow, and compliance with covenants.
  • Driving process improvements and establishing best practice across finance operations.
What you'll need to succeed
  • Qualified accountant (ICAEW, ICAS, CIMA or equivalent) with circa 10 years post-qualification experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of IFRS, statutory reporting, and audit processes.
  • Gravitas to operate at Board and senior leadership level.
  • Hands-on approach with the ability to lead and grow a finance team.
  • Commercial acumen and experience in complex, regulated environments.
  • Self-starter with a continuous improvement mindset, able to use initiative and commercial acumen to drive solutions.
What you'll get in return
Why Join NEP?
  • Be part of a groundbreaking project that will transform both the UK’s energy landscape and the local Tees Valley community.
  • Shape the finance function of a pioneering carbon capture and storage project.
  • Work in a dynamic start-up environment with significant investment and growth plans.
  • Collaborate with industry leaders and government stakeholders.
  • Modern offices in central Darlington, close to the train station and with free on-site parking.
  • Flexible & hybrid working pattern
