An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Senior Accountant to join a Local Authority within the Corporate Finance team.
This is a key role supporting the Head of Corporate Finance, providing high‑quality financial advice, contributing to statutory accounts, and support with the delivery of robust financial controls in line with local government legislation and accounting standards.
This role would suit a qualified AAT or part‑qualified CCAB accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA) with experience in local government finance, ideally in financial reporting.

Your new role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the council’s financial cycle, year‑end closure and statutory reporting
  • Producing in‑year financial reporting, revenue and capital accounts
  • Contributing to the statutory final accounts for the Council and Council‑owned companies
  • Supporting the Medium‑Term Financial Plan (MTFP) and value‑for‑money assessments
  • Maintaining and reconciling balance sheet and general ledger accounts
  • Supporting audit processes and developing clear audit trails and governance documentation
  • Monitoring budget commitments and escalating financial risks or pressures

What you'll need to succeed

To be considered for this Senior Accountant role, you will ideally have:
  • AAT qualified or part‑qualified CCAB accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA)
  • Experience in financial reporting or accounting within the public sector
  • Strong understanding of local government finance, governance and legislation
  • Experience supporting budgets, financial monitoring and year‑end processes
  • Advanced Excel / spreadsheet skills and strong financial analysis capability
  • Confident communication skills with the ability to engage senior stakeholders and non‑finance colleagues
  • Experience supervising staff or leading workstreams
Desirable experience includes:
  • Knowledge of VAT and taxation within a local authority environment
  • Experience contributing to change management or service transformation
