About the Role
We are seeking caring, patient and resilient Primary SEMH Teaching Assistants to support younger pupils across Northampton. This role is ideal for individuals who want to make a lasting difference to children experiencing social, emotional and behavioural challenges in their early school years.
Your New School
You’ll be joining a primary school that offers a nurturing, child‑centred environment, a supportive and collaborative staff team, clear behaviour policies and SEMH support systems, a focus on emotional wellbeing, positive routines and relationship‑building, and a warm and inclusive approach that values every child’s individuality.
Your Responsibilities
In this role, you will be supporting children aged 4–11 with a range of SEMH needs, including emotional dysregulation, anxiety or attachment needs, low confidence or self‑esteem, behavioural challenges, and difficulties managing transitions or routines. To do this, you will:
- Provide 1:1 or small‑group support depending on needs
- Build safe, trusting relationships with pupils
- Use de-escalation, positive reinforcement and school strategies to manage behaviour
- Help pupils develop social skills, emotional regulation and resilience
- Support classroom learning and encourage engagement through tailored approaches
- Maintain strong safeguarding awareness and communicate effectively with staff and parents
We’re looking for individuals who:
- Are calm, patient and nurturing
- Can remain positive and composed in challenging situations
- Have strong communication and relationship‑building skills
- Understand the importance of emotional development in early years
- Can follow behaviour plans and work closely with teachers and SENCOs
- Are passionate about helping children reach their full potential
- Are willing to learn (SEMH experience helpful but not essential)
Desirable Experience/Qualifications
- GCSE/O’Level or equivalent
- Experience working with primary-aged children
- Experience supporting SEMH, challenging behaviour or vulnerable young people (desirable)
- A valid driving licence due to location
