SEMH Specialist Teaching Assistant | Secondary School Job | London | HAYS Education

Your new company

Hays Education is partnering with a number of inclusive and supportive secondary schools across London, many of which have a strong focus on supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Due to rising demand, we are looking for resilient and dedicated SEMH Specialist Teaching Assistants to join our network.

Your new role

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who may experience challenges with behaviour, emotional regulation, and engagement in learning. You will play a crucial role in helping students feel supported, understood, and able to succeed within the classroom.
This role may involve working on a 1:1 basis or with small groups, both within mainstream classrooms and in alternative or nurture settings.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Supporting students with SEMH needs across Key Stages 3 and 4
  • Building positive, trusting relationships to support engagement and wellbeing
  • Implementing behaviour support strategies and de-escalation techniques
  • Assisting students to manage emotions, routines, and classroom expectations
  • Supporting learning activities and helping pupils stay focused and on task
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you will:
  • Have experience working with young people with SEMH or behavioural needs
  • Be calm, patient, and resilient, with a consistent and supportive approach
  • Have strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
  • Be confident working in a secondary school environment
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Hold (or be willing to obtain) an enhanced DBS check
Experience in schools, alternative provision, youth work, or care settings is highly desirable.

What you'll get in return

  • Competitive daily rates of pay
  • Opportunities across a range of secondary schools and alternative provisions
  • Flexible work to suit your availability
  • Long-term placements with potential for permanent opportunities
  • Ongoing support from a dedicated Hays Education consultant
  • Access to CPD and behaviour/SEND-focused training
