Pastoral Mentor – Special Schools & Alternative Education Settings
SEN Pastoral Mentor | Student Support Mentor | Inclusion Mentor | Youth Mentor
Black Country | Wolverhampton | Dudley | Sandwell | Walsall
Not every young person needs another teacher.
Sometimes they need a trusted adult who listens, encourages, motivates and believes in them.
I'm looking for exceptional individuals to work as Pastoral Mentors within specialist education settings, supporting children and young people who may have faced challenges in education, home life or their personal development.
This is a fantastic opportunity for people who naturally build rapport, remain calm during difficult situations and genuinely want to help young people succeed.
What Does The Role Involve?
No two days are the same.
You could be supporting a pupil who struggles to engage in lessons, helping a young person manage their emotions, providing positive encouragement throughout the school day or becoming the consistent role model they need to thrive.
Typical duties include:
  • Providing individual mentoring and support
  • Encouraging attendance, engagement and participation
  • Supporting emotional wellbeing and confidence
  • Helping pupils develop social skills and independence
  • Managing challenging situations in a calm and positive manner
  • Delivering intervention sessions and structured activities
  • Working alongside teaching, pastoral and safeguarding teams
  • Promoting positive outcomes both in and out of the classroom
The Schools I Recruit For
I work with a wide range of specialist educational settings including:
Special Schools
Supporting children and young people with:
  • Autism (ASC)
  • Learning disabilities
  • Communication needs
  • Complex additional needs
  • Sensory needs
SEMH & Therapeutic Schools
Working with pupils who may experience:
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs
  • Anxiety and low self-esteem
  • Trauma and adverse childhood experiences
  • Attachment difficulties
  • Emotional and behavioural challenges
Alternative Provision
Supporting young people who benefit from a more personalised approach to education, often requiring additional guidance, structure and mentoring to achieve success.
Ideal Backgrounds
I'm keen to speak with people who have experience in:
  • Youth Work
  • Children's Residential Care
  • Family Support
  • Sports Coaching
  • Community Outreach
  • Support Work
  • Mental Health Services
  • Foster Care Support
  • Substance Misuse Services
  • Probation Services
  • Police Community Support
  • Military Services
  • Voluntary and Charity Organisations
School experience is beneficial but not essential.
The most successful people in these positions are often those with excellent people skills, resilience and a genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people.
What We're Looking For
✅ Strong relationship-builder
✅ Positive role model
✅ Patient, resilient and adaptable
✅ Comfortable working with challenging behaviour
✅ Excellent communication skills
✅ Passionate about making a lasting difference
Why This Role?
  • Meaningful and rewarding work
  • Opportunities in specialist education settings
  • Long-term and permanent positions available
  • Excellent experience for careers in education, counselling, social work and psychology
  • The chance to have a genuine impact on a young person's future
If you've worked with young people, supported vulnerable individuals or have experience helping others overcome challenges, this could be the perfect next step.
Apply today to explore Pastoral Mentor, Youth Mentor and Student Support opportunities within Special Schools and Alternative Provisions across the Black Country.
