School Business and Operations Managers – Lancashire – September

We’re looking for proactive and experienced School Business Managers, Finance Managers and Operations Managers with strong financial and business skills to join Hays and support our vibrant, welcoming and friendly schools within the Lancashire area – covering various locations including Preston, Lancaster, Blackpool, Burnley and Blackburn. This is a vital role at the heart of the school, offering the chance to shape daily operations and contribute to the smooth running of the school.

As a School Business Manager, you’ll work closely with the Headteacher and wider admin team to oversee financial processes, manage office systems, and ensure compliance with school policies. You’ll lead on day-to-day finance tasks, such as budget tracking, invoicing, project management and procurement while helping the school make the best use of its resources to support pupils and staff.

We are looking for candidates who are available for temporary positions from September/October. Both full time and part time applicants can be considered.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Financial Leadership – Lead the development, monitoring, and reporting of the school’s budget. Provide financial support to the Headteacher and Governors, ensuring long term financial sustainability and value for money.
  • Financial Compliance and Risk Management – Ensure robust financial controls are in place and that the school complies with all statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Human Resources – Oversee recruitment, staff development, and HR compliance, including maintaining the Single Central Record.
  • Procurement and Contracts – Oversee procurement processes, manage contracts, and ensure effective asset management.
  • Community Engagement – Promote the school’s profile and reputation within the local community.

What We’re Looking For

  • A relevant qualification in business or financial management
  • Experience of working with school systems such as SIMS, FMS, Arbor, Access or PS financials.
  • Experience working within an educational setting.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • A proactive, flexible, and resilient approach.
