Hays Education are working in partnership with a school in Gateshead to recruit a Safeguarding Lead for a permanent position. This is a confidential appointment – further details will be shared with shortlisted applicants.

About the Role
This is a key safeguarding position within a school setting, supporting young people aged 11–16.
You will play a central role in ensuring that safeguarding is proactive, robust, and embedded in a relational, child-centred approach. Working closely with senior leaders, staff, families, and external agencies, you will lead on safeguarding processes and promote a strong culture where the safety and wellbeing of every pupil is paramount.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a designated safeguarding lead, managing concerns, referrals, and safeguarding records in line with statutory guidance.
  • Monitor safeguarding trends and ensure timely and appropriate interventions
  • Work collaboratively with external agencies (social care, health, local authority) to support pupils and families.
  • Provide advice, guidance, and training to staff on safeguarding practice
  • Support pupils facing additional challenges, ensuring they feel safe, heard, and supported
  • Contribute to attendance and welfare strategies where safeguarding concerns impact engagement
About You
We are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and highly organised professional who can build trusted relationships and advocate effectively for young people.

You will ideally have:
  • Experience working with children or young people in education, social care, or a similar setting
  • Strong knowledge of safeguarding and child protection legislation (e.g. Keeping Children Safe in Education)
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with families and external partners
  • Experience managing sensitive information with professionalism and discretion
  • A calm, empathetic approach combined with the confidence to challenge and escalate where needed
A safeguarding qualification or willingness to undertake DSL training is desirable.
