Public Sector Reward Director vacancy in Leeds

Your new company

A central UK organisation with a significant national footprint is seeking an accomplished reward specialist to oversee and shape remuneration across a varied portfolio of high‑profile UK entities. This influential position provides a unique platform to guide senior reward decisions and support organisations that play a critical role in delivering national priorities.

Your new role

This is a rare career move for a seasoned reward professional who has worked in consultancy and worked for a business with multiple organisations. You will be keen to make an impact as well as acting internally in a typical generalist reward fashion. This job could suit someone from a consultancy or financial service sector background looking to transition from the private sector into a meaningful public sector-aligned environment. The role combines strategic advisory work, complex stakeholder management, and the opportunity to influence reward frameworks. This role can be full-time or part-time, working 3–4 days per week.

Reward Strategy & Advisory

  • Advise boards and management on reward and wider people-related considerations. For example, executive reward, corporate governance, diversity & inclusion, HR strategy and incentive design across multiple organisations.
  • Interpret and apply relevant pay rules to ensure alignment with governance expectations and value for money.
Stakeholder Leadership

  • Build trusted relationships with senior HR leaders, external consultants, and policy stakeholders.
  • Full project management, covering senior stakeholder management, preparation of deliverables, commercial management of budget and timelines, including during periods of high change such as change of ownership, IPOs and strategic turnaround.
  • Lead on commercial strategies, including building and optimising client relationships and exploring routes to market
Operational & Technical Delivery

  • Provide independent views and strategic solutions, drafting papers for Board and Remuneration Committee meetings, as well as shareholder and public communications. For example, Directors Remuneration Reports, regulatory announcements, and AGM materials (including Q&As)
  • Attending and presenting at Remuneration Committee and other Board meetings.
  • Lead benchmarking exercises, job evaluation processes, and grading structure reviews.
  • Monitor market trends, identifying risks and opportunities in both public and private sector reward landscapes.
Team Development & Collaboration

  • Support, coach, and mentor junior team members within a broader governance setting.
  • Work closely with colleagues across multiple functions to drive consistency and best practice.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Background in senior reward roles. You must have worked in a consultancy (national organisation or delivery firm) and supported multi‑organisation advisory work.
  • Strong expertise in remuneration policy, benchmarking methodologies, and incentive plan design.
  • Ability to work independently, manage complex workloads, and deliver high‑quality outputs at pace.
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills, capable of engaging stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience advising Remuneration Committees or senior boards.
  • Ideally, a working knowledge of public‑sector pay frameworks—or a willingness to develop this quickly.
  • Experience contributing to or leading multi‑disciplinary teams, including supporting junior colleagues.
What you'll get in return
A very competitive basic salary, bonus opportunity, pension and hybrid working 2 or 3 days from home per week.
Opportunity to work part-time
