You will work for a small, successful sports magazine publishing business based in Northwest London. This company has been in operation for 100+ years and has a reputation for retaining staff long-term.
Your new role
This position has come about to replace a long-standing Financial Controller who is due to retire at the end of the year. You will take the lead on ‘all things finance’, supported by an Accounts Assistant who you will oversee on a day-to-day basis (as well as two other non-finance personnel). Responsibilities will include:
- Preparation of monthly Management Accounts, providing commentary and presenting in monthly board meetings
- Preparation of P&L for all products/revenue streams
- Budget control across multiple departments, partnering with stakeholders
- Providing necessary reports to departmental heads and offering guidance on process enhancements
- Financial analysis to facilitate accurate forecasting
- Identifying and providing recommendations on cost savings and increased revenue opportunities
- Oversight of AP, AR, VAT returns and bank reconciliation
- Preparation of payroll (including commission and bonuses) and managing pension contributions
- Providing all necessary information to enable smooth year-end accounting and audit
- Handling year-end insurance renewals.
What you'll need to succeed
This isn’t a role for a traditional Accountant, it requires someone who wants to be at the heart of the business, offering expertise, maturity and initiative.
- Experience in a similar Financial Controller/Finance Manager role, leading the finance function within a small department/company
- Articulate with strong communication skills and the ability to successfully partner with and influence non-finance stakeholders
- Hands-on approach with the ability to utilise varied prior experience and bring fresh ideas
- Ability to drive performance, improve processes, and deliver insights
- Xero system and publishing industry experience are advantageous (not essential).
What you'll get in return
- Flexible working options are available, with a hybrid working pattern of 3 days in the office and 2 from home each week.
- Working hours are 9:30-17:30 Monday-Friday, with the possibility to start/finish earlier/later, to suit
- Discretionary bonus of up to 10%
- Pension (employer contribution increases to 7% after 5 years’ service)
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
