Principal Sustainability Officer | Estates & Facilities Team Up to £44,700 DOE

Your new company

You’ll be joining a public sector organisation within the Estates and Facilities function, responsible for delivering sustainability, decarbonisation and environmental initiatives across a complex, multi‑site estate.


The team works closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to drive improvements in environmental performance, support carbon reduction targets and contribute to wider public sector sustainability strategies. This is a forward‑thinking environment with a strong commitment to achieving net-zero ambitions and improving long‑term environmental outcomes.

Your new role

  • You will support the development and implementation of sustainability and decarbonisation strategies across the organisation, managing projects from inception through to delivery.
    You will play a key role in driving environmental performance, supporting funding applications, and ensuring compliance with legislation and policy requirements, while working closely with stakeholders to deliver measurable improvements across the estate.

    Key responsibilities include:

    - Supporting the delivery of sustainability and decarbonisation projects across the estate
    - Assisting with development of business cases and securing funding through grant applications
    - Developing and implementing sustainability strategies and environmental policies
    - Providing expert advice on environmental compliance and risk
    - Monitoring, auditing and reporting environmental performance, including net-zero targets
    - Analysing data and providing insight on carbon reduction and cost efficiency opportunities
    - Supporting impact assessments to reduce environmental and financial risk
    - Leading continuous improvement initiatives across sustainability practices
    - Engaging with stakeholders to promote sustainability objectives and best practice
    - Supporting organisational targets aligned with national and regional environmental policy

What you'll need to succeed

- Degree in environmental sustainability, ESG or related discipline
- Experience delivering sustainability or decarbonisation initiatives
- Strong understanding of environmental legislation and policy frameworks
- Experience in project management, business case development and funding applications
- Knowledge of environmental performance monitoring and carbon management
- Strong analytical and reporting skills
- Ability to engage stakeholders and influence organisational change
- Professional membership (e.g. IEMA, ICRS) desirable
- NEBOSH Environmental or similar qualification beneficial
