Principal Town Planner - London Borough - Long Term Contract

You will be joining a busy and well-regarded North London local authority with a strong and varied development pipeline. The borough is seeing ongoing growth, with a mix of complex and high-profile applications ranging from major residential schemes to mixed-use and regeneration projects.

Your new role

As a Principal Development Management Planner, you will take the lead on a caseload of complex and major planning applications. This is a key role within the team, requiring strong technical expertise and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
You will be responsible for assessing proposals, negotiating with applicants, and ensuring developments align with local and strategic planning policy. The role will also involve engagement with members, stakeholders, and the wider community.
Key responsibilities include:
• Leading on complex and major planning applications across a range of development types
• Negotiating with developers to secure high-quality, policy-compliant outcomes
• Preparing detailed officer reports and presenting at planning committee where required
• Providing expert advice to internal teams, members, and external stakeholders
• Supporting junior planners within the team
• Contributing to the efficient running of a high-performing development management service

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you will have:
• Extensive experience in development management within a local authority setting, ideally within a busy London Borough
• A strong track record of handling complex applications
• RTPI accredited qualification (or equivalent experience)
• Excellent report writing and communication skills
• The ability to work independently and manage a demanding caseload
