Your new role
As Operations Manager, you will act as the right hand to the General Operations Manager, stepping in as their representative when required. You’ll be responsible for the strategic planning and execution of operational duties, ensuring seamless coordination across departments. This is a high-impact leadership role where you’ll manage internal meetings, customer interactions, union negotiations, and disciplinary and grievance procedures. You’ll also play a key role in recruitment and team development, ensuring the business maintains its high standards of service and compliance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting and deputising for the General Operations Manager
- Helping drive operational excellence across a busy and expanding shipping operation
- Leading strategic planning and operational execution
- Managing disciplinary and grievance hearings and appeals
- Handling customer complaints and ensuring resolution
- Collaborating with unions and leading negotiations
- Chairing internal and client-facing meetings
- Contributing to recruitment and talent acquisition strategies
- Weekly reporting and performance reviews with senior leadership
What you’ll need to succeed
- Proven experience in operations management within shipping, logistics, or a related sector
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to represent the company professionally
- Experience in handling HR processes including disciplinary and grievance procedures
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, particularly in union environments
- Strategic mindset with a hands-on approach to problem-solving and team coordination
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under pressure
