Job Title: Maintenance Operative – Carpenter
Location: Estates and Facilities Directorate Faculty:
Contract Type: Full-time

About the Role
We’re looking for a skilled carpenter to join our Maintenance Team within the Estates and Facilities Directorate. This is a practical, hands-on role where you’ll be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and enhancing the university’s buildings and infrastructure through high-quality carpentry work.
You’ll carry out a wide range of tasks including planned preventative maintenance, reactive repairs, and minor refurbishment projects. From repairing doors and windows to installing bespoke timber fixtures, your craftsmanship will help ensure our spaces are safe, functional, and fit for purpose.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out carpentry-based maintenance including:
    • Repairing and replacing doors, frames, locks, windows, skirting, flooring, and furniture.
    • Installing timber structures, fittings, and fixtures.
    • Conducting inspections and surveys to identify faults or deterioration.
    • Supporting minor refurbishment and improvement projects.
  • Respond to maintenance requests, diagnose issues, and take appropriate action.
  • Use CAFM systems to manage workload and report progress.
  • Collaborate with other trades and assist with general maintenance tasks when required.
  • Mentor apprentices and support their development in carpentry skills.
  • Ensure all work complies with health and safety regulations, RAMS, and permit-to-work systems.

What We’re Looking For
Essential:
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Carpentry/Joinery, or significant experience in a similar role.
  • Strong practical skills in all aspects of carpentry and joinery.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Good understanding of building regulations and health & safety practices.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and deliver high-quality work.
Desirable:
  • Experience using CAFM or Helpdesk systems.
  • Previous experience in a facilities or estates maintenance environment.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Willingness to work on-call or out-of-hours when required.

Working Environment
You’ll work across a variety of buildings, including workshops, lecture halls, offices, and student accommodation. Some work may involve confined spaces, working at height, or in plant rooms—PPE and safety training will be provided.
